Don Bosco a reçu de nombreuses lettres tout au long de sa vie. Dans les années 1880, il en recevait parfois plus de cent par jour. Il aurait lui-même écrit probablement plus de vingt mille lettres, dont une centaine en français et un petit nombre en espagnol, anglais et allemand. Dans une lettre datée du 8 juin 1880 adressée à don Monateri, il mentionne avoir reçu une multitude de lettres.
