Tutto il taglio della sintetica elaborazione che segue su Cusmano – Don Bosco, pur nella consapevolezza di un’ardita operazione pioneristica (non mi risulta nessuna pubblicazione precedente in tal senso), si colloca sul piano di semplici «appunti» e nella prospettiva, speriamo realizzabile!, di futura più ampia riflessione storica.
Questo estratto offre una panoramica sulla complessa riflessione all’interno della congregazione salesiana riguardo all’identità e al ruolo dei salesiani nella Chiesa cattolica.
E ormai largamente conosciuta l ’edizione critica delle « Opere e scritti editi e inediti » di San Giovanni Bosco, cui il compianto D. Caviglia attese negli ultimi anni della sua laboriosa esistenza con amore di figlio e con indagine di dotto e che ora è giunta al suo IV volume, mentre è pronto il materiale di altri volumi successivi.
Il presente volume offre al lettore i frutti della accurata indagine sulle testimonianze del Processo canonico di S. Maria Domenica Mazzarello, confondatrice con don Bosco dell’Istituto delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice.

La storia dell’Istituto delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice è costantemente permeata dal riferimento al Fondatore san Giovanni Bosco,presupposto che garantisce la vitalità e la continuità della sua missione educativa lungo il tempo. Il ritornare con intelligenza e senso critico alle proprie radici, infatti, è un’azione imprescindibile al fine di orientare in modo saggio e coraggioso le scelte operative nel campo dell’educazione cristiana dei giovani e delle giovani.
In the framework of such a short introduction, I would like to recall some basic principles, obvious enough to most specialists. The first half of my presentation will be historiographical: by tracing the way in which a congregation’s past has been perceived over the course of time, I will point out themes for research that seem of interest to me.
