Don Bosco, a tireless apostle of Marian devotion, emphasised the role of the Blessed Virgin for salvation of the individual in the Companion of Youth: she is the mediatrix of graces, defence against the assaults of evil, support in living a Christian life and on the way to holiness. These are things he draws from St Alphonsus Liguori: true devotion expressed through a life of virtue above all guarantees the most powerful patronage one could have in life and in death.
The first edition of Il giovane provveduto (in English The Companion of Youth) appeared in 1847 and was Don Bosco’s greatest publishing success. The year he died it had reached its 119th edition. It was reprinted with minor adaptations until 1961. It is also the book which Don Bosco most liked and constantly recommended.
The biographical profiles of Louis Comollo (in the 1854 edition), Dominic Savio, Michael Magone and Francis Besucco are among the spiritual and pedagogical documents which are most representative of Don Bosco’s outlook. In qualità di biografo e vice postulatore della causa di beatificazione di Maria Domenica Mazzarello Ferdinando Maccono ebbe l’opportunità di accostare quasi tutte le fonti relative ad essa. Dal 1910 in poi don Maccono aveva consultato molti parenti, coetanei, ex-allieve del laboratorio e dell’oratorio e quasi tutte le FMA che convissero con MM a Mornese e a Nizza Monferrato, comprese le missionarie delle prime tre spedizioni missionarie. Per la qualità del lavoro e della documentazione riportata, tale biografia può essere qualificata a tutti gli effetti come biografia-fonte per la conoscenza della vita e spiritualità di santa Maria Domenica Mazzarello.
