Dominique est entré dans la vie de Don Bosco durant l’automne 1854. L’apôtre turinois avait alors trente-neuf ans. D’emblée, l’enfant et le prêtre s’étaient compris: Don Bosco put former Dominique selon l’idéal de sainteté qu’il portait en lui. Pendant vingt-huit mois, il veilla sur son âme. Toute son œuvre en bénéficia, car il semble bien que la température spirituelle de la «maison» du Valdocco monta en flèche de 1854 à 1857. Pietro Stella – “Il modo di lavorare di don Bosco” in “Domenico Savio da Don Bosco. Riflessioni sulla vita. Atti del Simposio (Roma, 8 maggio 2004)”
Al di là dell’importanza che ha sempre avuto nella prassi educativa dei salesiani, la Vita di Domenico Savio scritta da don Bosco ebbe tra fine Ottocento e prima metà del Novecento un’importanza tutta particolare nel vissuto religioso e sociale cattolico, soprattutto in Italia. Il libretto rispondeva in effetti a una sorta di richiesta individuale e collettiva, più o meno consapevole ed esplicita. Ci si spiega così il notevole successo editoriale che la Vita ebbe fin dal suo primo apparire (1859).
