Arthur Lenti – “The founding and early expansion of the salesian work in the San Francisco area from Archival Documents, Part II” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

As in the earlier article, so also in the present one, besides transcribing and translating pertinent archival documents (chiefly letters), I will try to provide an essential historical framework designed to make the sequence intelligible.

Pascual Chavez Villanueva – “”You will be my witnesses… even to the ends of the Earth” (Acts 1, 8b). Presentation of the Italy-Middle East Region” in “Acts of the General Council of the Salesian Society of St John Bosco”

The letter begins with warm greetings to the recipients, highlighting recent events within the Salesian Congregation. It notes the appointment of Fr. Luc Van Looy as Bishop of Ghent, expressing gratitude for his service and announcing the appointment of Fr. Adriano Bregolin as the new Vicar General. Arthur Lenti – “The founding and early expansion of the salesian work in the San Francisco area from Archival Documents” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

Recently the Central Salesian Archives released the files of the Rua rectorate on some 1,750 microfiches. This boon has made archival research in that rectorate possible even for students residing away from the Central Archives.

Michael Mendl – “The zeal of the salesians is just the thing. Founding of the salesian work in New York” in “Journal of Salesian studies”

Over one hundred years ago, on November 28, 1898, three Salesians arrived in New York to initiate a Salesian apostolate among the Italian immigrants of that metropolis. In March of the previous year four of their confreres had undertaken a similar mission in San Francisco.

Paul Formosa – “Historical sketch of the oratory of Don Bosco in Malta” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

In this article, I will attempt to trace how Don Bosco’s original experience was translated in such a way that his work could be established in Malta – an island country in the Mediterranean with a distinct tradition and culture from that in which the Salesian story first began and developed in Turin, Italy. I will place special emphasis on the Salesian Oratory, Sliema.

Thomas Koshy – “The relevance of Don Bosco’s preventive system of education in the context of the young at risk in India” in “Con Don Bosco educatori dei giovani del nostro tempo”

On 25th January 2015, Don Bosco Navajeevan (A home for street children/Young at Risk) in Hyderabad received 230 young boys. They were rescued by the police who raided bangle-making units in the Old City in Hyderabad. The children, aged between 8 and 18, had been held as bonded labour. This is only the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Mr. Satyarthi, the Nobel Prize laureate, says that the Indian cities have a lot more hidden child labourers working under near-slavery conditions. What is worse, the children did not quite appreciate their release from “child labour” and being sent to their home states: Bihar and West Bengal; many of them said that they would return to the same work later.

Francis Desramaut – Don Bosco and the spiritual life

Don Bosco (1815-1888) was the acrobat-saint, priest, journalist, and apostle of poor and abandoned youth. But was he also a man of the spiritual life, and did he leave a
spiritual heritage? Yes, says Father Francis Desramaut. And in some ways it is a heritage very like that of our own age, stirred and renewed by the Second Vatican Council. This book, one of the first to deal with Don Bosco’s spirituality, is drawn from sources which were largely unknown or ignored by earlier authors. It presents a Don Bosco free of fanfare, rooted in the tradition o f the great spiritual masters, creative in view of his own times.
