Nestor Impelido – “Salesians in the Philippines (1949-1963): historical notes” in “The beginning of the Salesian presence in east Asia”.

The aim of the Seminar is to present the beginnings of the Salesian Presence in East Asia and Oceania. The Philippines, as part of this Salesian Region, has also its beginnings and origins from the first Salesian Presence in East Asia: China. For in the two times that the Salesians started to root themselves in the Philippines, they came from China to negotiate and to concretise what they negotiated. John Nguyen Van Ty – “The beginning of the salesian work in Vietnam: the patriarchal story and exodus” in “The beginning of the Salesian presence in east Asia”.

Up to the present day, officially the Salesians of Vietnam has had a history of over 52 years. A history that is long, as well as epic and fruitful enough to draw admiration from many, as well as attention of those who are interested in Salesian history, as we are here in these days. Unluckily, because of the social and political turmoil of the country, most of the documents had been destroyed or lost, which certainly renders the writing down this history become a very challenging task. it is my task to present to you a short historical account of the first period of this glorious history. The beginning of the Salesian Work in Vetnam, of which, in using biblical expression, I would dare to give a subtitle: The Patriarchal story and the Exodus. The account that my presentation is dealing with covers a time-span of about 25 years, roughly from 1930 to 1955. Marivic Sombero – “The seeds of Mornese in Timor. FMA contribution to the implantation of the salesian charism” in “Implantation of the Salesian charism in Asia – Ideals, challenges, answers, results”

The present paper, a textual elaboration of the power-point presented at the Batulao Seminar, tries to re-capture the salient moments in the history of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) in Timor (and Indonesia) from their arrival up to the present day. Our presence in this land is rather recent considering that we arrived in Timor only in 1988.

Francesco Motto – “Salesian missionary activity while blessed Filippo Rinaldi (1921-1931) was Rector maior with particular reference to eastern Asia” in “The beginning of the Salesian presence in east Asia”.

On 6 February l922,Pius XI (1939) ascended the Papal throne: he would become known as a “Pope of the Missions” (as was his predecessor, Benedict XV). Two months later, on 24 April, Fr. Filippo Rinaldi ( 5 December 1931) was elected Rector Major: his ten years in office would be recalled for the great re-launching of the Salesian missionary movement. After a rapid glance at the “missionary policy” of the Papacy during the same period, we shall concentrate on that. Francesco Motto – “Storia e Congregazione.

The Rector Major, Fr J. E. Vecchi, had already in 1997 emphasized the importance of the study of salesian history (cf. Letter For you I study, AGC 361), and in 1998 he came back once more to the same argument.

Stanisław Zimniak – “Pro memoria with regard to the Preservation of the Cultural Heritage” in “Storia e identità salesiana in Africa e Madagascar. Questioni di conservazione del patrimonio culturale”

During the 1st International Seminar on the History of Salesian Work in Africa and Madagascar, held between 11 and 14 October 2011 at Karen (Nairobi – Kenya), it was possible to reflect in a special way on the question of the production and the conservation of the Salesian memory. It was noted that in the care of the Provincial archives (with few exceptions: as for example that of the Provincial Archives of Central Africa) much remains to be done from both the point of view of the personnel responsible for this sector in our Congregation, and from the point of view of the state of the structures that need to be put in place to safeguard in the best way the memory of what the SDB have done. Rather there appears to be an alarming situation which requires something to be done quickly, without it being put off indefinitely.
