Nella diocesi di Torino, dopo il declino dell’impero napoleonico, si fecero numerosi sforzi per riformare la società cristiana. Questi sforzi includevano la ripresa della catechesi parrocchiale, l’organizzazione di missioni popolari e esercizi spirituali per tutte le classi sociali, ma si concentravano principalmente sulla riforma del clero. La quinta sezione descrive l’ampio sviluppo edilizio di Valdocco, il quartiere di Torino dove San Giovanni Bosco fondò la sua opera educativa e religiosa. Questo sviluppo comprendeva la costruzione di quattro chiese e decine di fondazioni in Italia, Europa e America Latina, al fine di ospitare gratuitamente migliaia di ragazzi e fornire formazione religiosa e professionale a centinaia di sacerdoti e suore salesiane.

Il contributo mette in relazione don Bosco educatore con la pedagogia preventiva per farne emergere somiglianze e originalità rispetto a quella adottata nel secolo in cui egli visse. Sin dall’inizio della sua opera, in don Bosco, è presente la convinzione sul valore preventivo dell’educazione per la società, insieme alla consapevolezza della necessità di una metodologia preventiva nella pratica educativa. Tali presupposti sono il terreno nel quale si sviluppa e matura la sua proposta, che viene consolidandosi nel “Sistema preventivo”. L’apertura delle Scuole Professionali da parte di Don Bosco portò immediatamente al problema delle maestranze tecniche. Se inizialmente Don Bosco si era accontentato di mezzi di fortuna per soddisfare le esigenze del momento, non continuò a fare affidamento al caso. Si impegnò subito a trovare guide qualificate per i suoi giovani, permettendo loro di avere una maggiore libertà di movimento e garantendo al contempo il successo nell’apprendimento.
