With this contribution the intention is, after a look at the ideological background to the “springtime of the writing of Salesian history”, to examine even briefly, our situation and relationship with the writing of Salesian history–to deal with the writing of history directly associated with the religious Institutes founded by Don Bosco, limiting myself however, to the Salesian Society.
During the 1st International Seminar on the History of Salesian Work in Africa and Madagascar, held between 11 and 14 October 2011 at Karen (Nairobi – Kenya), it was possible to reflect in a special way on the question of the production and the conservation of the Salesian memory. It was noted that in the care of the Provincial archives (with few exceptions: as for example that of the Provincial Archives of Central Africa) much remains to be done from both the point of view of the personnel responsible for this sector in our Congregation, and from the point of view of the state of the structures that need to be put in place to safeguard in the best way the memory of what the SDB have done. Rather there appears to be an alarming situation which requires something to be done quickly, without it being put off indefinitely.
Con questo breve contributo si vuole – dopo un cenno allo sfondo ideologico della “primavera storiografica salesiana” – trattare della storiografia inerente le istituzioni religiose fondate da Giovanni Bosco, limitandosi però alla Società salesiana (SDB). Sull’Istituto delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice (FMA) interverrà autorevolmente sr. Piera Cavaglià.
In the historiography, Marrou distinguishes a past lived by the persons and a past relived by those who study it, because history is reconstructed, necessarily interpreted in the search for the meaning of facts and of their connections.
Il Marrou distingue nella storiografia un passato vissuto dalle persone e un passato rivissuto da chi lo studia, in quanto la storia è ricostruita, necessariamente interpretata nella ricerca del significato dei fatti e dei loro collegamenti.
Una recentissima rassegna bibliografica di pubblicazioni in varie lingue relative a don Bosco e comprese nei repertori bibliografici della rivista “Ricerche Storiche Salesiane” contempla ben 958 titoli, quasi tutti di opere edite negli ultimi venticinque anni.
A very recent bibliographic review of publications in various languages relative to Don Bosco and included in the bibliographic repertoires of the review “Salesian Historical Researches”, comprises 958 titles, almost all concerning works edited in the last twenty-five years.
Questo lavoro considera le tendenze storiografiche nei circoli africani contemporanei sia ecclesiatici che civili. Data la relativa brevità di questo saggio e l’occasione in cui viene presentato, esso non vuole offrire un’esposizione estesa di tali correnti in questo continente così vasto e multiculturale.
The following paper considers historiographical trends in contemporary African ecclesiastical and civil circles. Given the relative brevity of this essay and the occasion when it is read, it does not pretend to give an extensive exposition of such currents in this rather vast and multicultural continent.
Africa is considered for a long time in the perception of people in the West as the “Dark Continent”. Because there were no written sources, Hegel thought that Africa had no past.
Questo mio contributo è collegato all’esperienza dei Salesiani nell’Ispettoria dell’Africa Centrale (AFC); per tale motivo, mi propongo di ripercorrere con voi l’iter della mia esperienza, perché possiate vedere, fra l’altro, che questo percorso non ha avuto niente di programmato, ma è stato orientato dalle circostanze; anche il ricorso ai vari generi di fonti è stato una questione di circostanze. Non c’è stata insomma, a monte, alcuna programmazione sistematica.
Nella percezione della gente dell’Occidente l’Africa è stata lungamente considerata un “Continente nero”, ovvero ignoto. Data l’assenza di fonti scritte, Hegel pensava che l’Africa non avesse un passato.
Comme notre intervention est en rapport avec l’expérience des salésiens dans la Province d’Afrique Centrale (AFC), je me propose ici de retracer mon propre parcours, pour que vous puissiez voir, entre autre, qu’il n’y a rien eu de programmé dans les actions entreprises, mais que les choses se sont orientées au fur et à mesure des circonstances, tout comme d’ailleurs le recours aux différents genres de sources a aussi été une question de circonstances. Il n’y a donc pas eu au préalable une programmation systématique en tant que telle.
Credo che le questioni da trattare in questa sede siano di tre tipi:
– il problema della formazione dei salesiani all’interesse per la storia (civile, ecclesiastica, salesiana) e, indirettamente, al senso storico necessario in tutte le vicende di una certa importanza concernenti le ispettorie e le case salesiane;
Trois genres de problèmes me semblent se poser dans le domaine qui nous intéresse ici:
– le problème de la formation des salésiens à l’intérêt pour l’histoire (civile, ecclésiastique, salésienne) et, par ce biais, au sens historique nécessaire quand on traite de n’importe quelle affaire d’importance au niveau des provinces et des maisons salésiennes.
