A different type of writing comes to us from Josephine Giorgi, the second cousin of St. Luigi Versiglia. Josephine lives in Springfield, Massachusetts. The excerpt from a biography of Bishop James Walsh of Maryknoll by Raymond Kerri son exemplifies the apostolic spirit of the two Salesian martyrs along with Bishop Walsh’s deep esteem for them.

We believe in education and we challenge ourselves to plan our procedures in its regard; youth ministry comes into being when education is translated into concrete educational processes. The effort to plan, by means of the SEPP, keeps alive our willingness to be actively present amongst the young. By following the four dimensions we are helped in developing the personality of the young Christian through a systematic variety of proposals and a broad understanding of youth ministry which is open to everyone. In the end there are certain choices which run through all of Salesian ministry. Fullness of life and the happiness of human beings is the ultimate purpose of the plan of God. The Gospel of Christ shows great trust in humanity. It demands that we pay attention to the unique reality of every person and their willingness to accept their vocation and destiny in Christ, the perfect man. The Gospel proposes the good news (the person of Christ) who invites everyone to share in Christ’s sonship, the foundation of the freedom and dignity of every person. Don Bosco educated and evangelised by carrying out a project of holistic development. He saw education as the growth of the person, with all the means necessary to assist the person. Evangelisation inspires people to the fullness of life offered in Jesus and enlightens them in its pursuit, always respecting the developing conscience of each person. Finally, regarding the choice of fi eld of ministry, we are sent to the poor, especially the poorest, and to ordinary class environments, where we seek to humanise and evangelise the culture. Sul concetto di catechesi, sul suo inserimento nell’insieme dell’azione pastorale e sul suo rapporto con altri momenti dell’agire ecclesiale (come l’evangelizzazione, la liturgia, l’educazione cristiana, l’impegno apostolico, ecc.) non sempre si hanno idee chiare e concordi. Sarà utile, in questo senso, tentare una delucidazione delle realtà in gioco.

L’azione apostolica esercitata da mons. Giuseppe Fagnano a fine secolo XIX ed inizio secolo XX nella Patagonia australe e nella Terra del Fuoco, se da un lato trova le sue lontane premesse nei suoi entusiasmi giovanili per un servizio a Dio e alla Patria e nell’esperienza religiosa ed educativa con don Bosco a Valdocco, Lanzo e Varazze, dall’altra trova i suoi ravvicinati preliminari nell’ardua fondazione del collegio a San Nicolás de los Arroyos in Argentina e soprattutto nella sperimentazione missionaria su Río Negro e nel centro-nord della Patagonia.
Nel maggio 1868 don Bosco fu invitato dal vescovo di Alba, l’amico Eugenio Galletti, a tenere il panegirico di san Filippo Neri al clero della sua diocesi. Egli compose con molta cura il discorso, concentrando l’attenzione sullo zelo apostolico e sul metodo pastorale di Filippo.
Attraverso un breve itinerario storico-spirituale si presenta la spiritualità educativa di suor Teresa Valsè Pantellini. In particolare, partendo dagli anni dell’infanzia e della fanciullezza si individua in essi l’agire preventivo della grazia di Dio nella sua vita.
