The Rector Major wishes that the new year will be a time for all to deepen the spirit of Don Bosco within their hearts. Through this, they can gradually actualize the pedagogical and pastoral perspectives outlined in GC23. He emphasizes the significance of the “community day,” suggesting that during community gatherings, which are crucial for ongoing formation, they recite the prayer found in paragraph 95 of the Chapter document. Paul Wynants – “Writing the history of a religious teaching institute: guidelines for research, sources and methods (19th and 20th Centuries)” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

In the framework of such a short introduction, I would like to recall some basic principles, obvious enough to most specialists. The first half of my presentation will be historiographical: by tracing the way in which a congregation’s past has been perceived over the course of time, I will point out themes for research that seem of interest to me.

Juan Edmundo Vecchi – “Centennial celebration of the salesian presence in the United States of America. Homily in San Francisco, February 2, 1997” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

For the beginning of our centennial celebration we are gathered together here as a family in the place where the Salesians established their first presence in the United States of America. When we compare our present- day situation with that at the moment of our arrival we find much for which we must be grateful to God.

Egidio Viganò – “Letter of the Rector Major” in “Acts of the General Council of the salesian society of St John Bosco”

The Rector Major writes on the anniversary of his first religious profession, marking 50 years since that significant date, just halfway to the centenary celebrations of the congregation in ’88. He completed his novitiate two years after Don Bosco’s canonization and is observing his Golden Jubilee of profession a couple of years before the centenary of Don Bosco’s death. This period of time prompts reflections on his Salesian experience.
