The first half of my presentation will be historiographical: by tracing the way in which a congregation’s past has been perceived over the course of time, I will point out themes for research that seem of interest to me.

Sono mutate le forme di conoscenza anche all’interno della congregazione salesiana dopo che attorno al 1960 si sono estinti gli ultimi testimoni diretti della vita del santo. Nel secondo dopoguerra si può dire giunta agli epigoni nella Chiesa l’epoca dominata dalla lettura agiografica e meramente edificante dei santi. As in the earlier article, so also in the present one, besides transcribing and translating pertinent archival documents (chiefly letters), I will try to provide an essential historical framework designed to make the sequence intelligible.
For the beginning of our centennial celebration we are gathered together here as a family in the place where the Salesians established their first presence in the United States of America. When we compare our present- day situation with that at the moment of our arrival we find much for which we must be grateful to God.
The Rector Major writes on the anniversary of his first religious profession, marking 50 years since that significant date, just halfway to the centenary celebrations of the congregation in ’88. He completed his novitiate two years after Don Bosco’s canonization and is observing his Golden Jubilee of profession a couple of years before the centenary of Don Bosco’s death. This period of time prompts reflections on his Salesian experience.
