This auspicious occasion marks the commencement of the special Marian Year proclaimed by the Holy Father in his encyclical letter “Redemptoris Mater” (RM), which will span until the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady in 1988. The Pope envisions that Mary’s fullness of grace, as the one who believed, should illuminate and guide the Church’s faith as it journeys through the final years of the twentieth century.
