Nel pieno della Grande Guerra il giovane Mario Marega trascorse due anni a Vienna, dal 1916 al 1918, nel convitto affidato dal Ministero degli Interni alla direzione della Congregazione Salesiana.
Il nostro saggio si articola in tre parti. Nella prima si accenna al dibattito in atto sulla condizione giovanile in Austria; si parla della mentalità antipietistica, ispiratasi al Leitmotiv «zurück zum praktischen Christentum» (torniamo al cristianesimo pratico), nominando i più significativi rappresentanti e il loro rapporto con i salesiani.
