Don Bosco sinh năm 1815 tại Becchi, nước Ý. Năm 1841, Don Bosco thành lập Nguyện xá tại Tôrinô dành cho các thanh thiếu niên và trẻ em nghèo, cho các công nhân từ miền quê lên thành phố làm việc. Năm 1846, Nguyện xá thánh Phanxicô Salê chính thức có trụ sở tại Valdocco (Tôrinô, Italia), gọi là “Nguyện xá Valdocco”. Năm 1847, Don Bosco bắt đầu mở lưu xá, xưởng dạy nghề và các lớp học tại đây. Công cuộc của Nguyện xá Valdocco dần dần phát triển. Sau đó, ngài thành lập Tu hội thánh Phanxicô Salê (dòng Salêdiêng Don Bosco) vào năm 1859. Năm 2021 là dịp kỷ niệm 100 năm ngày qua đời của cha Phaolô Albera, Đấng kế vị thứ hai của Don Bosco. Những cuốn tiểu sử và cuộc đời của cha Phaolô Albera được xuất bản và được chuyển sang các ngôn ngữ khác nhau; các lá thư của ngài cũng được biên tập và xuất bản vào năm 2021. Up to the present day, officially the Salesians of Vietnam has had a history of over 52 years. A history that is long, as well as epic and fruitful enough to draw admiration from many, as well as attention of those who are interested in Salesian history, as we are here in these days. Unluckily, because of the social and political turmoil of the country, most of the documents had been destroyed or lost, which certainly renders the writing down this history become a very challenging task. it is my task to present to you a short historical account of the first period of this glorious history. The beginning of the Salesian Work in Vetnam, of which, in using biblical expression, I would dare to give a subtitle: The Patriarchal story and the Exodus. The account that my presentation is dealing with covers a time-span of about 25 years, roughly from 1930 to 1955. This contribution to the Salesian History Seminar on the implantation of the Salesian charism in the EAO region has great significance for the Vice-Province “Mary Help of Christians” of Vietnam, which will celebrate 50 years of the presence of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in 2011.
How the Salesian Charism has been implanted and taken root in a country is indeed a very interesting and at the same time a very challenging theme. In the case of Viet Nam the planting and the growing processes seem to be neatly cut, surrounded by the turbulent events of the history of modern Viet Nam.
