Negli ultimi decenni, sembra che la presenza di Don Bosco come fondatore di istituzioni e il suo pensiero pedagogico abbiano avuto una minor rilevanza nella produzione libraria e nella saggistica al di fuori della cerchia salesiana, sia a livello scientifico che di divulgazione. In particolare, nella storia del movimento cattolico in Italia, alcuni storici come Giorgio Candeloro e Gabriele De Rosa hanno trascurato di menzionare Don Bosco nelle loro sintesi storiche del secondo dopoguerra. È mutato il modo di vedere il fondatore dei salesiani nel grande panorama della storiografia. Sono mutate le forme di conoscenza anche all’interno della congregazione salesiana dopo che attorno al 1960 si sono estinti gli ultimi testimoni diretti della vita del santo. Nel secondo dopoguerra si può dire giunta agli epigoni nella Chiesa l’epoca dominata dalla lettura agiografica e meramente edificante dei santi. He highlights the growing appeal from the southern hemisphere, particularly evident through initiatives like Project Africa and the establishment of young foundations in Polynesia, Melanesia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Nell’anniversario della morte del Venerabile Fondatore e Padre, don Rua sente irresistibile bisogno di rivolgere di nuovo qualche parola e alcune riflessioni sullo stato della cara Congregazione e sopra loro stessi. In questa giornata, dovrebbe essere naturale immaginare che D. Bosco dal cielo, ove per giudizio infallibile della Chiesa si trova, ripeta, con un’efficacia senza pari, alcuni insegnamenti e varie utilissime raccomandazioni, che si udivano dalle sue labbra durante la sua carriera mortale. Il a dirigé un volume intitulé “Don Bosco nella storia della cultura popolare” (Don Bosco dans l’histoire de la culture populaire), publié en 1987, qui a rassemblé des essais de divers auteurs, la plupart non salésiens.
