Filippo Crispolti – Don Bosco

Nel 1841, Don Giovanni Bosco iniziò la sua opera accogliendo un ragazzo povero e abbandonato a cui insegnò catechismo nella sagrestia della chiesa di S. Francesco d’Assisi a Torino. Ventisei anni dopo la sua morte, una statistica pubblicata dal Senatore del Regno, Barone Antonio Manno, in occasione del concorso del Municipio di Torino per un monumento internazionale a Don Bosco, mostrava lo straordinario sviluppo delle sue istituzioni. Arthur Lenti – “Saint with a human face: Don Bosco in Father Giulio Barberis original chronicle” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

The Central Salesian Archive contains numerous eyewitness reports of Don Bosco’s words and deeds, particularly in the form of chronicles and memoirs. I drew heavily on these documents for previous articles which saw the light of day in the pages of this Journal. I shall do the same for the present article.

Paul Wynants – “Writing the history of a religious teaching institute: guidelines for research, sources and methods (19th and 20th Centuries)” in “Journal of Salesian Studies”

In the framework of such a short introduction, I would like to recall some basic principles, obvious enough to most specialists. The first half of my presentation will be historiographical: by tracing the way in which a congregation’s past has been perceived over the course of time, I will point out themes for research that seem of interest to me.
