Francesco Motto – “History of the historiography of Don Bosco” in “Storia e identità salesiana in Africa e Madagascar. Questioni di conservazione del patrimonio culturale”

A very recent bibliographic review of publications in various languages relative to Don Bosco and included in the bibliographic repertoires of the review “Salesian Historical Researches”, comprises 958 titles, almost all concerning works edited in the last twenty-five years.

The datum is significant as it indicates that the literature on Don Bosco, started when he was still living, is still very much alive today. As for any other literature, also this one had obviously to be subjected to the laws of history and of life, and particularly to the law of evolution. As we limit our study therefore to the Salesian historiographic production, we can see that it too, in fact, has passed from the first modest and moderated biographical profiles of the Saint of the 70’s of the XIX century, to the numerous eulogistic biographies initiated at the end of the XIX century and continued up to, and beyond half way through the XX century, to the historic-scientific studies of the postconciliar period and finally, almost as a normal development of that phase, to the editions of the most important bosconian sources of these last three decades.

Una recentissima rassegna bibliografica di pubblicazioni in varie lingue relative a don Bosco e comprese nei repertori bibliografici della rivista “Ricerche Storiche Salesiane” contempla ben 958 titoli, quasi tutti di opere edite negli ultimi venticinque anni. Il dato è significativo in quanto indica come la letteratura su don Bosco, iniziata lui vivente, sia quanto mai viva ancora oggi. Anch’essa ovviamente, come ogni altra letteratura, ha dovuto soggiacere alle leggi della storia e della vita, ed in particolare alla legge dell’evoluzione. Per limitarci dunque alla produzione storiografica salesiana, va notato come essa sia infatti passata dai primi modesti profili biografici del santo degli anni settanta del secolo XIX, alle numerose biografie encomiastiche iniziate sul finire del secolo XIX e continuate fino ad oltre la metà del secolo XX, agli studi storico-scientifici degli anni del postconcilio e finalmente, quasi come normale sviluppo di tale fase, alle edizioni delle fonti donboschiane più importanti di questi ultimi tre decenni.
