Reginald D. Cruz – “Contemporary African historiographies: roots, conflicts and trajectories” in “Storia e identità salesiana in Africa e Madagascar. Questioni di conservazione del patrimonio culturale”

The following paper considers historiographical trends in contemporary African ecclesiastical and civil circles. Given the relative brevity of this essay and the occasion when it is read, it does not pretend to give an extensive exposition of such currents in this rather vast and multicultural continent.

Nonetheless, I hope to paint satisfactorily this landscape despite the limitations, so that the listeners could understand the methodological problems, epistemological controversies, and cultural complexities they would face in doing African history.

Questo lavoro considera le tendenze storiografiche nei circoli africani contemporanei sia ecclesiatici che civili. Data la relativa brevità di questo saggio e l’occasione in cui viene presentato, esso non vuole offire un’esposizione estesa di tali correnti in questo continente così vasto e multiculturale. Spero comunque di descrivere in maniera soddisfacente questo panorama nonostante i limiti, così che gli ascoltatori possano comprendere i problemi metodologici, le controversie epistemologiche e le complessità culturali che si affrontano facendo storia africana.
